A natural gas line exploded a few blocks from the North end of the Las Vegas strip, injuring four workers in the area. One worker was hospitalized with serious injuries from burns that covered a large percentage of his body. The cause of the explosion is still unclear.

The explosion occurred on Monday as workmen were constructing the Sky Las Vegas luxury condominium project. The luxury condos at Sky Las Vegas are scheduled to open later this year, complete with three story luxury apartments that open onto rooftop patios. That may now be in question as investigators seek out the source of a blast that sent construction workers to the hospital.

The explosion occurred on Monday when a natural gas line was ignited at the construction site, situated at the North end of the Las Vegas strip. Workers on the scene were apparently unable to smell the odor agents that the city introduces into the gas line as a first line of defense against potential explosions.

Adding odoriferous has been a common practice in the United States since the late 1930s. The practice came about as the result of a natural gas explosion at the New London School. No one on the property was able to smell the gas building up inside the school, which eventually ignited and killed hundreds of students and teachers in the resulting blast.

Investigators have concluded that the result of Monday's explosion in Las Vegas can be traced to a damaged natural gas line located in a swimming pool pump room. Investigations have not, however, revealed the specific source of the explosion.

According to Scott Allison, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department, one worker was severely injured with serious burns over 30 percent of his body. Three other workers received less serious burns. Of the four men who were injured, three were taken to an area hospital, while the fourth was treated for minor burns at the scene of the explosion.

Authorities reported that the fire was out by the time the Las Vegas Fire Department arrived at the scene. Although there was no sign of damage to the construction project, authorities did summon State workplace safety officials to investigate the incident.

Workplace safety inspectors have not issued any comments or statements at this time. Neither have spokesmen for the condominium project. The 45 story condo development is expected to open 409 luxury units on the Las Vegas strip later this year. It is unclear at this time if the explosion will result in any construction delays.
